I caught up briefly with Syracuse (UT) defensive back Kavika Fonua yesterday and asked about his recent scholarship offers (Utah and BYU) and asked about where he stands and his timeframe on making a decision.
He says he's very excited about both offers and likes both schools a lot. Neither school are the 'leader' right now, both are equal at this point. Utah running back Karl Williams is his brother-in-law so he has a connection on the Utah roster but he says that won't play a factor in his decision.
Outside of his two offers Fonua says he's hearing a lot from Washington and Montana. Fonua says he's planning on announcing where he'll play before the start of his senior season in August so we could have an announcement from him within the next 2 months.
Fonua says he'll be at the Nike All-Poly camp held in Salt Lake City coming up in a few days but isn't planning on attending any other camps after that. He could pull in an offer or two there and could see a few more come in before he announces his school in the near future.
Fonua is a SPARQ warrior. He has fantastic numbers that make him an intriguing prospect. He has good size (6'0" 198lbs) and he's a very smart, heady player. He looks like a prototypical strong safety; he loves contact, loves to hit, and he has good vision and instincts. He doesn't quite have the size or build you'd want in a FS, and I don't see him being able to bulk up to OLB size or playing CB, so strong safety seems like the natural fit at this point.
Last week at the Nike Skills Camp in Oregon Fonua clocked a 4.48 40-time and showed off a 39" vertical.
