CF.C's 2012 Cougar Sportsman of the Year
He is so good, and so accomplished, that when Cougfan.com editors mulled the idea of choosing a 2012 Cougar Sportsperson of the Year, there really was no other true contender.
Travis Long, Andrew Furney, Deone Bucannon, Jeff Tuel, Taylor Ard, Derek Jones and Marcus Capers were among the names bandied about, but when it came to numero uno, the big, left-handed Aussie was in a class all his own.
Of course, Motum had a few things going his way besides tremendous skill and character. In looking at the calendar year, he benefited from being a standout in the last two-thirds of last season plus the first one-third of this season. He also benefits from the fact the football team had a mostly rotten season, despite the best efforts of Long, one of our all-time favorites, who receives our nod for Most Inspirational Cougar of 2012.
As for Motum, his 2012 was a year for the ages.
Of the many facts and stats that help illustrate the point, none is perhaps more persuasive than this: He became only the third Cougar in history to score 500 or more points and pull down 200 or more rebounds in one campaign. The other two players to do it are in the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame: Steve Puidokas and Larry Beck.
Last season, he led the Pac-12 with 18 points per game (38th highest in the country), while pulling down 6.4 rebounds (seventh in the conference) per outing. His field goal percentage (.554) was 26th in the nation.
For his efforts he was named All-Pac-12 first-team and the league's Most Improved Player. He also earned a spot this pre-season on the John Wooden Award watch list as the nation's best player.
Through 12 games this season he is on pace to hit the 500/200 milestone again, averaging 19.9 points and 7 rebounds per game.
But it's not just the measurable output that makes Motum CF.C. Sportsperson of the Year. It's also attitude. As Ken Bone told us earlier this month, Motum "brings it" every night, no matter the opponent. "He's motivated to become a great basketball player," Bone noted.
We think Big Brock is already there. And that's why he's our unanimous choice for Cougar Sportsman of the Year for 2012. Click below for a photographic look at Motum's work up close ...
