Folsom (Calif.) athlete Phillip Carter (6-1, 190), had a season opener to remember.
Breaking in new quarterback Jake Browning, Carter was on the receiving end of 10 passes, racking up 317 yards and five touchdowns, half of Browning’s 10 touchdown throws. Carter also had an interception, a fumble recovery and a pair of tackles.
Not a bad way to start the season.
Now Carter, who has a pair of Ivy League offers from Harvard and Yale, is hoping that signals the beginning of a big senior season and opens up more opportunities for offers.
“I have the offers from Harvard and Yale, and I’m also hearing from Utah, Nevada, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Colorado State and San Jose State,” said Carter. “Those are the main ones but I also sent my Hudl film to Oregon State and Washington State and they said they’re interested in me and they like me. They like me as a defensive back.”
While Carter did the majority of his damage in the opener on offense, defense is where his primary focus has been.
“I play mostly safety in our defense, but I could play cornerback too,” said Carter. “I like receiver and have a lot of experience and if that opens up some opportunities, that would be great. I definitely think about it and I can go either way in college, so I’m not set on the secondary. Safety is just my preferred position overall.”
Carter said that most coaches have told him the first three games will go a long way with them.
“They said they’ll watch the first three games, so that’s the consensus,” said Carter.
Carter does have one dream school, though, a place a former teammate is now playing.
“Right now my dream school is definitely Stanford,” said Carter. “Jordan Richards (from Folsom) is there, and I haven’t talked with him about telling them about me, but I hope he is.”
During the spring, Carter visited Harvard and Yale, and was offered by both, and he also camped at Rice, Nevada, San Jose State and Cal Poly.
This weekend, Folsom will take on Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley in an intersectional game.
Academically, Carter has a 3.67 GPA and scored a 30 on the ACT and an 1865 on the SAT.
