Is the Big 3 now the Big 4 in the Mountain West? How far did BYU fall after their beatdown from Air Force?
1.
TCU
(2-0) (0-0)
The Horned Frogs keep on rolling with a 62-7 win over Tennessee Tech. 270 yards on the ground from 9 different ball carries for 6.7 yards a carry will get the job done.
2.
Utah
(2-0) (1-0)
Got the job done with a backup quarterback against an inferior opponent. Still have things to work on, but the jump to 14th in the polls is huge, giving the Utes a realistic shot at the National Championship Game should they run the table. They were ranked 16th in the coaches poll in 2004 and 22nd in 2008 after two games.
3.
Air Force
(2-0) (1-0)
409 yards rushing against
BYU
will get the job done. Could the Falcons spoil the anticipated Utah-TCU undefeated matchup by knocking off the Utes who have to come to
Colorado
Springs the week before? We’ll see just how good this team is this week when they travel to
Oklahoma
.
4. BYU (1-1) (0-1)
Why does everyone but Bronco Mendenhall seem to know who his quarterback should be? The defensive execution against Air Force was awful. The rushing attacks of
Florida State
and
Nevada
(the Cougars’ next two opponents) should be licking their chops after the Falcons put up 409 on Saturday.
5.
San Diego State
(2-0) (0-0)
Freshman
Ronnie Hillman
with 150 yards and 4 TDs against
New Mexico State
is the best back at SDSU since
Lynell Hamilton
, and possibly since Marshall Faulk. We’ll see just how far this program has come in year 2 under Brady Hoke when they go on the road to face
Missouri
this week.
6.
Wyoming
(1-1) (0-0)
Two weeks. Two lackluster performance running the ball. The Cowboys are currently 118th in the country in yards per game on the ground. Austyn Carta-Samuels seems to have regressed in year 2.
7.
UNLV
(0-2) (0-1)
The Rebels had their chances to hang with Utah, but just couldn’t capitalize once they got into Ute territory. At least the quarterback situations seems to be solved with
Omar Clayton
taking back the job.
8.
Colorado State
(0-2) (0-0)
Nevada is going to be pretty good, but 51-6? You can’t give up 631 yards of total offense and expect to compete. No touchdowns through two games means Steve Fairchild’s seat just got scorching hot.
9.
New Mexico
(0-2) (0-0)
Another week. Another drubbing. This time 52-17 at the hands of
Texas Tech
. Doesn’t get any easier this week with Utah coming to town. Worst team in college football?
