has been the starting quarterback at since his freshman year at Central High East in Fresno (CA), so he's used to the spotlight that comes with leading one of the premier programs in the Central Valley. Now that star running back Brendon Bigelow
is likely out for the year for the second straight season, carrying the team falls largely on his shoulders. After a quick start to the season, Baker is looking for his recruitment to pick up as well.
Currently without a written offer, he feels a few teams are on the verge of making it official.
"San Diego State
said they're probably going to be offering me soon. Arizona
is showing a lot of interest and wants to see my first few games this year before they offer. I'm also talking a lot to Washington
, Fresno State
, and Oregon State
Baker is currently favoring four schools right now over the others.
"Right now I have four favorites," Baker says. "They are Washington, Utah
, Arizona, and Fresno State."
Baker and his family will be in Salt Lake City this weekend to watch the Utes take on UNLV
and meet with the coaches.
"I really like Coach (Aaron) Alford and Utah going to the Pac 12 was huge. Same thing with Fresno State going to the Mountain West. The Mountain West is much better than the WAC."
He plans on using all five of his official visits when his senior season rolls around, along with his constant visits to hometown Fresno State's practices.
What's it going to take to land his services in 2012?
"I'm going to take all of my visits, talk to the coaches to see who's really interested. I want to see where I fit in the best and which school I can help the most."
Baker isn't looking to make a decision anytime soon, but if the right situation presents itself, he'll pull the trigger.
"If the college I'm looking to go to offers me, that's where I'll go."
Baker is currently up to 6'3" and 195 with a 4.8 forty time. He reports a 3.3 GPA and a 1200 SAT score that he plans of taking two more times.
Mike Baker is one of the elite quarterback prospects in the West for 2012 and has Utah as one of his four favorites.
